How do I fix bad credit and do I have to pay off my debt?

April 25, 2010 · Posted in Fix my credit

I was unemployed for a few months and couldn’t afford to pay my bills. As a result I owe $4000 in credit cards, $2000 in other misc. bills and I also had a car repossessed. I also have a couple bills that went to collections. My credit score is really bad right now but I want to know how can I improve my credit score. I can’t really afford to start paying off my debt since I only work part time so my question is do I have to pay off previous debt in order to fix my score or can I just start paying bills on time and my score will improve? For how long will my past history show on my credit report and do you think it is a good idea to get a "bad credit" credit card (with high interest) just so I can start working on my score and since I don’t have a c.c at the moment?

Thanks

nope..you have to pay off old debt, people you owe can garnish your wages, if they can get a judge to order it…
you got into the mess, now get out yourself…bad credit follows you for 7-10 yrs..if I were you, I’d leave the credit cards alone..you’ve enough of a mess already.

your credit rating is dynamic, meaning that if you start getting them paid on time, then the score will start imporving. try and talk to the credic card issuers and see if they are willing to work somthing out so that you are not considered behind as long as you are paying xxx every month.
as far as credit following you – bad marks do, but you can get back on track and improve it over time. its not a cut and dry good or bad credit issue. its a score that is dynamic and its in direct ratio with your overall situation. as it has gone down, it can be improved if you get back on track and on time with your payments. dont listen to Chrys ( the one who said you got yourself into it so get yourself out). just concentrate on getting payments back on track and on time and your credit score will start to improve again…
