Disputing Negative Records With Credit Reporting Agencies Part1

The procedure of disputing errors with Consumer reporting agencies is simple and is described on the FTCs web site. It is also described in the guides you can get on our web site http://www.101creditrepair.com

Here are the basic steps:

Get and review your credit report. You can use annualcreditreport.com to get a free report from each of big free credit reporting agencies once a year. I suggest to subscribe to a service from Experian.com, or Equifax.com – for a small fee you will get unlimited number or reports. It will help you to monitor your progress.

Identify records to correct / remove (I have another video about analyzing credit report, or read about it in my guide at http://www.101creditrepair.com ).

Write letter to the CRAs (Credit Reporting Agencies) asking them to make required corrections. Make copies for your file. Send via certified mail (keep the receipt).

The CRA must investigate your dispute and reply in 30 (or 45) days.

If they corrected – great.
If CRAs have verified the record as valid, then the next step will be to contact the institution which has placed the record (original lender or collection agency) as described in the next video. See also at http://www.101creditrepair.com

Note: I recommend certified mail because other methods (phone, internet, etc.) don’t provide easy and uniform way to keep track of all correspondence. But if you still prefer these other methods, you must keep the log of all the events: when did you call, who did you talk to, what did you discuss, or what have you entered in the web form, etc.

What kind of items can be removed from my credit report?

Anything can be removed, including bankruptcies, foreclosures, late payments, collections, etc. If the bureaus are unable to validate the accuracy of these items, then they are required to remove them.

What is a credit inquiry?

When a creditor (like a mortgage or credit card company) wants to check your credit, they will “inquire” with the credit bureaus. The resulting inquiry can actually negatively affect your credit score for a short time, but not by very much. If a creditor pulls your report without your consent (like to make a special offer) or if you pull your report yourself, the inquiry doesn’t count against you.

How much money can I expect to save by improving my credit?

Higher credit scores can help you qualify for low refinance rates on your mortgage and reduced rates on credit cards. If you have an average amount of debt and improve your score from, say, 610 to 720, you could save as much as $350 to $450 per month. Over a lifetime, that could add up to tens of thousands of dollars.

What is a good credit score?

To qualify for the best rates and terms on a home mortgage, you will need at least a 680 or higher. Many lenders give their best rates to those with a 740 or better. For credit cards and car loans, you should probably qualify for the best rates with anything over a 640, though some lenders make special offers for those with over a 700 score. Anything below 620 will put you in the “sub-prime” category for home mortgages (meaning you’ll pay higher fees and get a higher rate). If you have less than a 600 score, you probably won’t get approved for most unsecured credit cards. Your goal should be a 770 score. We have yet to see a lender who would not give their best rates and terms to a person with that score.
